EARTHQUAKE STRENGTHENING

CUBACADE

CUBA MALL - WELLINGTON - 2015

Cubacade building at 110 Cuba street was build in 1917 and was deemed to be an earthquake prone building at only 10% NBS. The building is constructed of concrete, masonry, structural steel and timber. The more we worked in this building the more secrets it gave up. This was a challenging project where the scope of work increased in some aspect and decreased in other as we worked through the building.

Throughout this project we worked closely with both the client and design engineer to find economical solutions and complete the job as quickly as possible.

IN THIS BUILDING WE INSTALLED

  • 40 Sets of Reid Braces
  • 5500kg of 250mm PFC beams
  • 98m of SHS beams
  • 5x5m Eccentrically Braced Frame
  • 12 Micro Piles

This work was done within an occupied building. By sequencing the work, no tenant was out of the building for more then two weeks. To keep noise and dust to a minimum we used dust extraction systems when demolishing concrete and portable core drills.
We also used NxBurst non explosive demolition charges to demolish 3.5 cubic meters of reinforced concrete footing to make way for new ground beam and micropliles. Using NxBurst greatly reduced the time taken to demolish this concrete and therefore the disruption to the tenants.

iPAYROLL HOUSE

BOULCOTT ST - WELLINGTON - 2013

iPayroll (formally newspaper house) is a seven story concrete structure completed in 1977. This building was upgraded form 66% NBS to 97% NBS

IN THIS BUILDING WE INSTALLED

  • 48 Reid Braces
  • 850 Seating brackets to Conspan beams

Over 2000 holes of varying sizes were drilled into this building that was occupied 7 days a week during the day and 5 days a week through the night. To deliver this project we used a combination of portable core drills and dustless hammer drills.

The main difficulty with this project was sequencing work to ensure the building tenants were not disturbed. This was achieved by being fastidious when cleaning up, considerate of the tenants requirements and ensuring thorough communication with both the client and tenants. The project was completed to specification without a single complaint from any tenants or the body corporate. We completed this project on time and within budget.

RIVERSTONE RECREATIONAL HALL

UPPER HUTT CITY COUNCIL - 2014

Riverstone Rec Hall is a multi use building, as well as hosting indoor sports and wedding receptions the hall is also a civil defense building. Because of the buildings civil defense roll strengthening was a priority for the Upper Hutt City Council.

IN THIS BUILDING WE INSTALLED

  • 80m of 100x5 SHS beams
  • 8 Reid Braces

This project was put to tender by UHCC and posted to Tenderlink. We won this job on price and completed the job for less then half the estimated cost of the design engineer.
